Everybody is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day—except Patrick. He was actually British, and he didn’t wear green.

This gives us lots of leeway when we celebrate Irish heritage and culture. But let’s not go crazy. It doesn’t have to mean day drinking in shamrock-shaped sunglasses. Here are a few of my favorite things to celebrate my Irish heritage, not just on March 17th but anytime throughout the year.

I wear green all year round, and this is one of my favorite sweaters for spring. It pairs with blue denim and boots on a cold March day or white jeans and sneakers on one of those spring days full of sunshine.

Irish breakfast tea is something else you can enjoy all year. Don’t throw away your money on single-use decorations. Celebrate the Irish with something that you will actually use and each day.

A little dish is something that I keep by the kitchen sink and also by my bedside. I stash my rings and jewelry there when washing up or going to sleep. This is a perfect gift for someone hosting a St. Patrick’s Day party or just for yourself.

Whiskey rock glasses are another perfect gift. This set is etched, not printed, and has a nice heavy bottom.

If you want to fly your Irish flag, this is a personal favorite of mine for obvious reasons 🙂

Keep your party decor classy. I like this simple burlap banner for a mantle or a porch.

My sweet little town has an authentic Irish shop, and when you walk in, you are greeted with the scent of the Irish Sea. Inis is sold as perfume, cologne, and hand cream and in a diffuser. I keep the diffuser on the table by my front door, and we are welcomed by the fresh scent whenever we come home.

I wear a long, heavy-knit Irish sweater coat every spring and fall. I have worn it over a formal dress for an outdoor wedding ceremony in October, and I wear it with jeans in the spring and always get compliments on it. While I couldn’t find my exact sweater (I have had it for several years) this one is pretty close and excellent quality.

Look for me in this all baseball season. It’s my favorite new hat.

If you are going to a party, a parade, or a bar to celebrate, a classic Irish sweater is the perfect attire. I love this brand. Like the sweater above, this isn’t a novelty item but a piece you can wear all season for years to come.

If you are celebrating outdoors, you may need a scarf. March is fickle. Here is one that is appropriate for St. Patrick’s Day, but it is also a really nice scarf.

No celebration is complete without music, especially an Irish one. Music flows through our veins and is central to Irish culture. While Dropkick Murphy fans may dispute this, I think the Waterboys are the best band to listen to all day, and this is my favorite album.

I will leave you with a blessing for the day:

May the winds of fortune sail you,

May you sail a gentle sea.

May it always be the other guy

Who says, “The drinks are on me.”

Slainte.
