A book is a gift you can open a thousand times. I don’t know who said it, but it’s true. As a daily reader, since I was a child, I like to have a book with me wherever I go, just in case. Back in olden times, I always lugged a heavy hardcover book with me on the subway because my dad would send me his mysteries and thrillers when he was done reading them. I loved the free books, getting a package in the mail, and having something special we shared and discussed. I would pass them on to my roommate after reading them. I guess this was my first unofficial book club.
As time went on, I moved out of the city, and my daily commute fell away and turned into carpool line time. I started to carry paperbacks because I was buying my own now, and they fit easily in my purse. If I got in line for a really good spot, I could get 20 minutes or more of reading in each day.
Then the heavens opened up and sent down an angel in the form of a svelte little number that could hold as many books as I could read. I could give her whatever personality I wanted by choosing a cover and I would never, ever run out of something to read (even at the airport). Could you imagine anything better? I couldn’t. THEN, she was upgraded to a WATERPROOF version. Cue angels singing here. No more worries about dropping her in the bathtub or the ocean. But the very best feature for me is the font. Yes, I use the low vision setting (I’m not kidding) to read in the dark in bed without my glasses. We travel a lot for sports, and my son likes to play a little game where he reads what’s on my page from the bed across the room. Embarrassing… maybe, but it works for me!
I have a 2018 Kindle, and she is still going. When her time comes, and she needs to be replaced, this is the one I will be buying
Now, to dress her up. Keep it simple, or show some whimsy. Think about the texture, features, and design that work best for you. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Happy Reading!
