I was recently having a conversation with my daughter about the importance of always having an LBD (little black dress) in your closet. Even better, you should have a few choices so that you are ready for any occasion in any season. This got us shopping.
My daughter is in college, so she needs something fun for formals or a night out and something basic and classically styled that she can use for career fairs and interviews. I seem to change sizes these days, so I want something that is budget-friendly, comfortable, and versatile.
I recently bought this knit, tea-length dress with a pleated skirt. I really like the weight of the fabric. It’s warm enough for cooler temperatures, and it holds its shape nicely. I am on the short side, so I cuffed the sleeves and shortened it just a bit, but it would have been fine with a high-heeled shoe. Normally, I wouldn’t spend the money to have an inexpensive dress tailored, but the dress is so comfortable and fits so well, aside from the length, that it is worth it to me. It’s a simple enough style that I can wear it for a long time and it won’t look out of date.
A classic sheath dress is a great staple to have in the closet. It will never go out of style, and you can wear it to almost any occasion. I like the 3/4 length sleeve on this dress because it is flattering on everyone. The midi length is perfect for either an interview or a night out. This is one to have on standby, so when you need a dress on short notice, you can pull it out of your closet.
A tweed dress is another classic that never goes out of style.
Moving on from the classics, this tunic dress is elegant, comfortable, and packable for travel. I recently purchased this one as well, and it has a lovely and forgiving silhouette and is super comfortable to wear.
If you like that tunic style, this in another option with a sheer sleeve that has a fun swiss dot detail. Check the size guide before you buy because reviews are a little mixed on how this fits.
Moving on to the more casual LBD, I love this maxi dress for vacation or if you are lucky enough to live somewhere warm. Ric Rac is back for 2024. You will see it on pajamas, short sets and summer dresses all over the place. I love the tailored bodice and flowy skirt on this dress. It comes in lots of color options but you can’t go wrong with classic black and white.
While this isn’t technically a LBD it would certainly do the job. I have this set in Navy, and I LOVE it. It is super comfortable. It fits really nicely and is great for travel. Honestly this is a perfect vacation outfit because it works with sandals and a straw bag or with heels and an evening bag. It’s comfortable enough to wear all day.
Last but not least is my littlest LBD. This one isn’t for a career fair or job interview, but it is perfect for a hot day. I got this last summer and wore it over and over for the entire season. And it has pockets!
My mother always advised me that when I see a black dress I like, get it! You will always need one on short notice, and it’s better to have it on hand than to rush around looking at the last minute and settle for something you don’t really like.
