They call it a closet, but it’s not. At best, it’s an armoire. But it’s what they’ve got, and it’s what they will live with, and they will be just fine.
I have provided other storage solutions in my Move-In Day post. We use the three-tier drawers and hooks everywhere. If you have lofted the bed, then a small storage ottoman can do double duty as a step stool and extra drawer for the things they don’t use every day.
I use inexpensive closet organizers to make the most of the limited space inside the armoire.
If you are sending your daughter to school, regardless of the climate, she will have lots of leggings. This organizer is great. Fold a pair in half, clip it once, and it holds a ton.
I also re-purpose the hanging shoe organizer to become small shelves. They are the right size for T-shirts and other folded items. Once again, check out the photos from your child’s dorm on the parents’ Facebook page. If they have tall spaces, use the longer 8-section one, but if it is a smaller space, get one with fewer sections so that it will fit.
Don’t forget hangers 🙂
Since your kid will be walking in all weather, they will need a rain jacket even if they never ever wore one in high school. This is the one my daughter grudgingly took with her and then wore all the time.
It comes in a variety of colors and has great pockets. I got one for myself as well. My son had a pullover from his high school sports team, and he still wears that.
I use these hooks for over-the-door drying of shower towels, raincoats, or winter jackets.
I was on a college panel for parents at our High School, and someone asked us what was the ONE thing we were glad we sent that surprised us. Great question. This steamer was another mom’s answer. I never thought to send one, but if your kid is in any pre-professional clubs, fraternity, or sorority, they will have to dress up occasionally, and no one is ironing. Now, I’ve added it to my list.
Lastly, they will want a mirror. Somewhere. If you can hang it over the door on the armoire, that’s great; otherwise, I will attach some double-sided velcro options in my Move-In Day post to the wall.
