Last weekend was my nephew and his beautiful wife’s first wedding anniversary. It brought back wonderful memories of a fantastic weekend filled with family, fun, food, and so much dancing. It also reminded me of how stressed I was trying to figure out what to bring for the weekend trip. I wanted to look and feel my best so I could focus my energy on celebrating with my family and friends.
If you are looking for something to wear to a wedding or other formal celebration this fall, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered. I wanted something that made me feel as beautiful as I knew the evening would be, but I didn’t want to sacrifice comfort. I knew the food would be terrific, and I wanted to enjoy it. Plus, I was planning on doing a lot of dancing. I wanted to wear something that would be comfortable for all of it. I found this jewel-tone dress in a comfortable and forgiving fabric on Amazon and decided to try it (along with some others). Spoiler alert. This was a winner. It’s prettier in person than in the photo, which isn’t always the case. It was super comfortable and didn’t require shapewear (remember how I wanted to eat?). I wore a long, heavy, knitted sweater over it for the outdoor nuptials, and the short sleeves were perfect for cutting a rug indoors for the rest of the night.

Here is a photo of my Mom and me at the reception, and you can see that the dress looks much nicer than its affordable price point would lead you to believe. The food was as good as we had hoped, and the band was even better. I’m grateful this forgiving dress allowed me to enjoy it without worrying about a wardrobe malfunction.

When I wore that dress, I already had a heavy, full-length Irish sweater coat that was perfect for the outdoor ceremony, but if I hadn’t had that on hand, I would have worn this beautiful pashmina wrap. I love this piece because it’s dressy enough for a more formal occasion but can also be paired with jeans, a white shirt, and boots. The fact that it’s larger than a traditional scarf makes it a more suitable wrap for fall when it can do double duty as a sweater or a jacket.

If you live in or are heading to a warmer climate, I love the lines and the muted hues of this dress flowy maxi dress. The deep v-neck, elegant sleeves, and flowing silhouette are flattering on each and every body. You can’t beat the price, either. Get this dress, then go ahead and splurge on some shoes!

If you prefer a bolder palette, this colorful maxi dress is also a great choice. Once again, the plunging neckline, long, tapered sleeve, and flowy silhouette will suit any body type comfortably. This is another dress you could wear to dance the night away.

So those are a few ideas for the main event, but what about traveling to your destination or having lunch or brunch with friends and family before or after the big day? Don’t worry, I’ve got that for you too.

I love a long coat-style sweater. It’s a great transitional piece for fall when you don’t always need a full coat. This one sits just above the knee, so it’s not a full duster, and you could add a coat over it if you needed to. Add a scarf for a pop of color and an extra layer of warmth. I wear these to dress up a casual outfit, but I also wear them in the house before the heat is on, and my number one requirement is…… pockets. They are great for travel, especially car trips. I don’t like driving with a bulky coat, and my passengers and I don’t always agree on the temperature settings, so this is a perfect, easy layer to add.

This knee-high boot from Clark’s is perfect with a pair of jeans and a crisp button-down if you are lunching, brunching, or cruising around town. Clark’s footwear is known for comfort and support, so they are a go-to brand for me when I’m looking for a fall staple like an everyday brown boot. I wear these all fall and have walked miles in them with no blisters or sore feet the next day. They do not have a terribly generous calf, though, so check the size guide before you buy.

I love this deep cognac-colored bucket bag. This leather bag is large and in charge. There is a zippered inner compartment, inner pockets, and a magnetic closure on top, so there is plenty of space for everything you need to take with you. It comes with an additional guitar strap (turn it into a crossbody bag if you prefer) and has over 7,500 positive reviews.

Travel day or just need a little extra comfort? I have this two-piece sweater knit outfit and love it. It’s a heavy knit, making it a good medium weight and a comfortable fit. You can dress it up with the sweater coat shown above or throw it on with sneakers and a jean jacket. I like versatility. I can wear it as shown (substitute Birkenstocks for the heels), or I can swap out different tops. This is something that is easy to pack for travel because you can wear the pants with other sweaters or tees, and you can wear the black sweater with jeans, giving you lots of outfit options with just a few pieces to pack.

I recommended another version of this shoe in my Fall Weekend Away post, and it’s just so nice I’m reviewing it twice. The Ugg Tazz is super comfortable and warmer than the original Talisman version. I like the platform sole because it’s a little better when navigating puddles or leaf piles in the fall. Plus, I like the extra boost.

Let’s finish the outfit with this functional, wallet-friendly, find. It’s the perfect crossbody camera bag. It has a double zipper top with two compartments and interior pockets, so it’s roomier than it looks. It’s a great dupe for the more expensive camera bags. With over 900 positive reviews and a price point of about $25, I think it’s a steal.
